The Marriage Equality Fight in Minnesota By The Numbers |
There are four states fighting for marriage equality this November -- Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington -- but only one is playing defense. That would be Minnesota, where a constitutional ban on marriage equality is being floated to voters next week.
Marriage has been banned in Minnesota for years, but Republicans pushed through a ballot initiative this May that could explicitly ban marriage equality in the state's constitution (2004 flashbacks). Will fair-minded citizens reject the divisive amendment? There's a good chance they could.
First off, here's how Amendment 1 reads:
"Recognition of marriage solely between one man and one woman
Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?"
