Gay Movie Review - "Geography Club"
If last night's film, GBF, was the quintissential gay teen comedy of the year, then Geography Club is the quintissential drama.

This film has heart. On the surface, it's just another gay coming of age film, but it strives to be more. In the end it's a film about humanity.

The film starts off with an online chat between two high school kids - Russell and someone anonymous - who plan to meet for the first time to talk about being gay.

Both are shy about it, and the planned meeting goes awry. But soon enough the two meet, and Russell finds his online crush is a football player on the high school team.

A stolen kiss in the rain leads to discovery by another student, and Russell finds himself in the Geography Club - a covert LGBT student club on campus.

His closeted boyfriend, Kevin (played by Drop Dead Diva's newest angel-guy Justin Deeley), hatches a plan to get him on the football team so they can spend time together without suspicion, and Russell finds himself torn between two worlds.

He does something cruel to one of the outcast kids from the club to preserve his secret, and the trajectory of the rest of the film is set in motion from this pivotal moment.

Cameron Deane Stewart, who plays Russell, finds the balance between his gay side and his jock one, and never loses the audience's sympathy, even at his lowest.

Unlike GBF, which offered a heightened version of reality for humorous effect, The Geography Club serves up realness, with real heart.
