Gay Travel: Silver City, Crown Jewel of Southwestern New Mexico
Known for its vibrant arts community, gentle climate and exciting history, picturesque Silver City is the crown jewel of southwestern New Mexico.

Equidistant from Tucson and El Paso, this diverse, progressive city of 11,000 sits near the Continental Divide at the edge of the vast Gila National Forest. Comfortable and friendly, Silver City invites quiet relaxation or busy days of adventure. With dazzling blue skies, limitless vistas, and ready access to both lush forested slopes and stark desert landscapes, Silver City is a study in contrasts.

The town and its surrounding area are home to ancient cliff dwellings, humble adobes, and soaring red brick Victorian mansions. It offers twisting scenic roadways with breathtaking views, relaxing hot springs, and an eclectic variety of galleries and gift shops for those searching for the unexpected. Numerous fine restaurants and bars add to the visual and sensory feast of the historic central district, which can be easily explored by foot.

Silver City lays claim to a fascinating history, from Apache campground to Spanish settlement to bustling tent city mining camp. Downtown, "The Big Ditch," now a shaded linear park, was originally Main Street until turn-of-the-century thunderstorms flooded the town and simply washed the street away. A young Billy the Kid once lived nearby. You can learn much about the town's rich history at the Silver City Museum, housed in a restored 1881 mansion at 312 W. Broadway.
