Gay Travel: An American Grocery Shopping in Italy |
Back in Forli, finally, with Marco and Fabry, for the final short leg of our visit to Italy.
Fabry took us shopping at his local grocery store, and we thought we'd take the opportunity to point out a few key differences for the American Traveler buying groceries in Italy.
The first thing to know is that many of the larger grocery chains require a deposit to use the grocery cart - in this case a Euro. The carts are all chained together with little keys - put a one Euro coin in the slot and the cart will release. But don't worry - you'll get your Euro back later.
It's a system similar to the one we have at airports with the smart carts. And it's genius, in that it gives the customer incentive to return the cart themselves, so the store employees don't constantly have to go out collecting shopping carts.
