Gay Travel: Staycation in Providence, Rhode Island |

While we look to faraway and exotic locations for our vacation adventures, it's easy to forget about the many wonderful attractions in our own backyard. I'm a Rhode Islander--and it turns out that our capital, Providence, is a rich destination in and of itself. If a Providence "staycation" is in order, here are my top 8 must-sees:
1. WaterFire: A visit to Providence is not complete without experiencing the city's signature cultural event. During WaterFire, some 80 bonfires are lit along Providence's three rivers. Ecclectic music is played, performers fill the streets and gondolas are even available for hire. It's a mesmerizing experience that isn't to be missed.
2. RISD Museum of Art: The Rhode Island School of Design is one of the nation's premier art institutions--and its museum does not disappoint. My favorite exhibit includes a nearly 10-foot tall carved wooden Buddha from the 12th century. Tickets are cheap and the museum is rarely busy; I think it's one of Providence's hidden gems.
