Gay Marriage Watch: November 9th-November 15th

Here's the latest news on gay marriage from around the world. The big story this week is the huge, nationwide (almost worldwide) protests against Prop 8 and anti-gay-marriage forces by Join the Impact - over 300 US cities saw protests at city hall, including Sacramento, where we marched with an estimated 1,500 gay, lesbian and straight allies from City Hall to the State Capitol, chanting "What do we want? Equality! When do we want it? Now!". Join the Impact, a new group organized days after the election, estimated 1,000,000 would attend all the rallies combined. Stories about the rallies from around the country:

--Little Rock, AR (200) attendees

--Phoenix, AZ (2,000)

--Tucson, AZ (1,000)

--Los Angeles, CA (12,000)

--Palm Springs, CA (500)

--Redlands, CA (400)

--Sacramento, CA (1,500)

--San Diego, CA (25,000)

--San Francisco, CA (7,500)
--Walnut Creek, CA (400)

--Denver, CO ("hundreds")

--Washington, DC (900)

--Ft. Lauderdale, FL (1,000)

--Miami, FL ("hundreds")

--Orlando, FL (1,000)

--Tampa, FL (100)

--Atlanta, GA (1,500)

--Chicago, IL ("thousands")

--Wichita, KS (100)

--Boston, MA (4,000)

--Cambridge, MA (75)
--Northampton, MA (400)

--Baltimore, MD ("hundreds")

--Minneapolis, MN (1,000)

--St. Louis, MO (500)

--Raleigh, NC (1,400)

--Wilmington, NC (140)

--Albuquerque, NM (500)

--Santa Fe, NM (100)

--Las Vegas, NV (1,000)

--Reno, NV (300)--New York, NY (4,000)

--Cincinnati, OH (500)

--Portland, OR ("several hundred")

--Philadelphia, PA (2,000)

--Dallas, TX (1,200)

--Salt Lake City, UT (2,000)

--Seattle, WA ("thousands")

I'm also disgusted by the calls from the Mormon Church for "tolerance" - what, we're supposed to tolerate having our rights taken away? I'm happy to tolerate your views whatever they are, but I've NEVER tried to take your rights away and then asked you to just shut-up and "tolerate" it. So sorry, but we're not going to go away quietly.

On the flip side, there have been a few incidents of vandalism or harrassment by folks on our side (just as there were similar incidents from the Yes on 8 folks), and we have to say that violence and harrassment are never right, from either side.

In addition to the news of the week, you'll find our weekly woody award, links to some great articles and columns from the last seven days, and of course you'll also find our ongoing recap of gay marriage happenings worldwide over the last four months - for a longer history, just click on one of the older Gay Marriage Watch blogs from our archives. This Week's Woody Award:

This week's Woody award honors goes to the three new Democratic Senators in New York who are trying to block appointment of a new Democratic Majority Leader who plans to bring a vote to the floor on gay marriage. Not only that, but they want to put a referendum before NY state voters to try to ban gay marriage in that state entirely. Shame on these three party turncoats - they should be drummed out of the Democratic Party. Wanna be fascists? The Republicans would LOVE to have you. Enjoy your collective woody!

Runner up is Matt Barber, a right wing idiot who offers this chestnut in a horrendously homophobic analysis of the post-election events:

"The left’s venomous reaction to the passage of Prop 8 has showcased these people for who they truly are. It has removed the sublime mask, revealing an ugly and desperate countenance below."

Funny, Mister Barber, we thought that ugly face was yours. He wraps up with what he undoubtedly thinks is a clever turn of phrase: "What God has cast asunder, let no man join together." The God I grew up learning about in church doesn't tear his loving children apart. And he has no place for those who do. Sorry, Matt - no woody for you!

Events of the Last Week:

I think there's a lot of unfairness that goes along with being gay, so the more I can do to give them a voice, then I'll do so. But I think we'd be fooling ourselves if we thought that everywhere was accepting of gay rights and marriages. I think it's unfair there has to be some kind of standard for marriage. Marriage should be about two people celebrating their love for each other. It shouldn't have anything to do with someone's sexual preference." Source

Josh Brolin on Prop 8: "Who gives a s***! Who cares!... Doesn't mean (gay and lesbian people) are going to stop kissing in the streets, just cause they can't get married.
